Cognitive Remediation

Posted on 12/10/2010 by The Bridge

Cognitive remediation is a behavioral treatment that uses various mental exercises to facilitate improvement in targeted areas like memory, attention, processing speed and problem solving for people with mental illnesses. The aim is to improve cognitive impairments that are making it difficult for a person to achieve their functional goals.

The Bridge has been working with Alice Medalia, Ph.D. who is an international leader in the field of psychiatric rehabilitation, who focuses on the treatment of neuropsychological disorders in psychiatric illness. She developed the widely used Neuropsychological and Educational Approach to Remediation (NEAR) model to help people with mental illness improve their thinking or soft skills. Those having difficulty following directions, or who may find it hard to manage independent living can benefit from this kind of treatment.

The NEAR approach emphasizes individualized training, done in group formats using a computer assisted cognitive skills training program. Currently there are 32 Bridge clients, divided into 5 cognitive remediation groups that meet twice a week, taking advantage of this program and doing their treatment on computers. NEAR approach is an innovative addition to The Bridge’s treatment offerings, and has been successfully implemented in outpatient settings serving a diverse psychiatric and substance abusing population.
